Rep. Renacci to Host Fracking Forum at Walsh University

The forum takes place at 6:30 p.m. May 23 inside the university's Barrette Business & Community Center

The North Canton community will get a chance to discuss energy development at a public forum hosted by U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci at Walsh University next week. The forum takes place at 6:30 p.m. May 23 inside the university's Barrette Business and Community Center. “With improvements to the process of extracting natural gas and oil, Ohio has an opportunity to become a major player in the domestic energy game,” Renacci said in a news release. “That means more jobs for Ohioans and more affordable energy for all Americans. Still, it is important we ensure energy production is undertaken in an environmentally sensitive manner. This forum will bring together a diverse group of experts to speak with the Canton community about what is occurring here …

Mayor: Jobs, Lean Government Will Be Key to North Canton's Success

Mayor David Held gave the State of the City Address Wednesday night and focused on what it will take for the city to bounce back after the loss of the Hoover Company

Still on the rebound from losing the Hoover Company in 2008, the city of North Canton has focused its attention on maintaining a lean government and, of course, building up the Hoover District with more jobs. Mayor David Held went over those points and more at Wednesday night's State of the City Address inside Walsh University's Barrette Business & Community Center. Although the loss of the Hoover Company was a massive blow to the city, Held was unwavering in his message: North Canton is on its way back up. And that, he said, is because of the hard work of those working in the city. "It's not just one person; it's the state, it's the grants, it's the economic development director. It's the engineer and our city administrator. There are so …

Washington Square Starbucks Closes for Nine Days

The store at 2057 E Maple St. will close for renovations starting tonight

There's some buzz about Washington Square this week. Starbucks will close. For nine days. (Was that a collective shriek we heard from you coffee junkies out there?) Yup — that's nine days without white chocolate mochas, caramel frappuccinos and whatever caffeine-induced drink you grab to get you through your workday. But Starbucks is assuring us it's all for a good cause. The store is undergoing a remodel. Cool, right? Here's what store manager Beth Shelton had to say in an email to us this week: It is being redone to help us with speed of service and update the aesthetics of the store. We will gain a third Espresso machine that will help with getting drinks out faster. We are also pushing  the order speaker in the drive thru lane back so …

Car Dealers Hope for Better Sales

Sales soared in 2011, but have been more modest so far this year.

For Northeast Ohio car dealers, 2012 so far hasn’t brought a repeat of the big sales of 2011, when consumers returned to the market after a terrible 2010. But they’re optimistic things will pick up as the year goes along. As a 21-county region, Northeast Ohio car dealers sold 47,855 cars through March — about 1.8 percent more than the same period last year, according to the Greater Cleveland Auto Dealers Association. That’s a more modest gain than in other U.S. markets, where sales jumped by 20 percent over the same period, according to a National Auto Dealers Association report. But area sales managers don't focus on such comparisons. Their confidence in a slowly improving economy and a loosening loan market hasn't wavered. If the GCADA's…

Hi, Jeanne The vast majority of items we publish are specific to the individual Patches. From time to time, however, we do stories that cross boundaries. An example would be coverage of visits to the area by presidential candidates; if a candidate visits one Patch, we're pretty sure what he has to say there would be of interest in other Patches as well. The same thinking led us to look at a …   more ›
