Great Programs for Beating the Winter Blahs at Stark County District Library
It's great time to be a part of a public library. There are more programs and resources offered by your local library than ever before. As an employee of the Stark County District Library, I hope to share some of the many free programs and resources available to the community that you might not know about each week.
These are some of the programs coming up this week at a branch near you. Each program is linked to the Stark County District Library Events calendar, where you'll get more information about the program (such as the time the event is offered) and have the opportunity to register online or by phone to attend.
Family Freedom Quilts is being offered at four Library locations this week: Main Library (Tuesday, Jan. 24), Madge Youtz Branch (Wednesday, Jan. 25), North Branch (Thursday, Jan. 26), and Jackson Township Branch (Saturday, Jan. 28). Families are invited to craft a quilt square for their Library's Freedom Quilt. The Freedom Quilts will be displayed at the "Celebrating Black History Month 2012" Main Event at the Arts in Stark Education Center on February 18. Did you get a Kindle for Christmas? Kindles and Downloadable Books, offered at Lake Community Branch on Thursday, Jan. 26, is a great program to get acquainted with the Ohio eBook Project, and learn about the eBooks that they offer for downloading to the Kindle.
If you're style-conscious like me, you'll want to head over to Perry Sippo Branch on Thursday, Jan. 26 to check out 21 Ways to Tie a Scarf, a hands-on demonstration presented by Best Bib & Tucker, a consignment shop in Hartville. Keep warm and look great: it's win-win.
For Teen Tech Week, the Library is offering a program on Movie Maker, a nice video editing tool for aspring filmmakers. Teens will make a trailer for their favorite book, and the creations will be shown during the Book Trailer Oscars coming to the Library in March. This week, the program will be offered on Thursday, Jan. 26 at both Madge Youtz- and Jackson Township Branches. Lastly, on Saturday, Jan. 28, join us at Main Library for the 4th Annual Antiques Appraisal Show, and find out about your heirlooms and collectibles from qualified art and antiques appraisers.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and I took the class on ebooks and the Kindle at the main library on January 11th and I loved it. I highly reccommend that anyone who has a Kindle take the upcoming class at the Lake library branch. Dee Rondinella who taught the class I took was great. Besides telling me all I needed to know about the Kindle she also clued me in to the Gutenberg project. At www.gutenberg.org you can download free ebooks for your Kindle, Ipad, and home computer. These books are ones that were printed before 1923 and therefore in the public domain. You can keep these books forever and they are absolutely free. For anyone that loves the classics you can have the world's greatest books on your computer, Ipad, or Kindle for your own. I recently downloaded Don Quixote and am currently rereading this classic. My thanks to the Stark County Library for the class and my thanks to Santa for bringing me the Kindle.

That's great! Thank you, Ken, for sharing your experience. Dee and the entire technology training staff are great teachers. Whether you want to learn about eReaders, or just want to take a class on Microsoft Excel, the library offers a wide variety of computer and tech classes all year.
