The Cleveland RTA announced today that they pressed charges against the woman accused of choking and spitting on a bus driver before he responded with a violent uppercut.

Shidea Lane, 25, reportedly boarded an RTA #5 bus Sept. 18 without paying. A dispute began —which was recorded on a cell phone and later became a viral video — that ended with the notorious uppercut delivered by the angry bus driver.

Many Patch commenters have jumped to the driver's defense, arguing that Lane's behavior was innapropriate.

What do you think? Does Lane deserve to be criminally charged? Take our poll, and tell us why in the comments!

Yes...she put the life of every passenger & anyone else who was on that street @ the time @ risk by attacking the driver while bus was in motion. She could have caused an accident that possibly lead to loss of lives.

Alan, so no sarcasim. Wow. Are the RTA fees just a suggestion? Does anyone have to pay or can we all ride for free?

The only free public transportation that I am aware of is using your feet.

Seems Alan's attitude is what gets people into trouble.

"I wan it, but I ain't wan to pay for it, so I jus take it." Then they wonder why they get arrested.

i would like to point out RTA is Private Entity Alan and isn't classified as "free public transportation" if it was then the bus drivers would be considered City Workers. it is basically like any transportation company ie. Taxi/Cab, Train, and Airplane. next time call a cab and have them take you somewhere and tell them your not going to because they are "public transportation" see how far you get with that one. Metro/RTA is not provided by the city, it is merely the transportation provider for the city and its residents which is separate

When she chose to disrespect Mr. Artis and the other customers and put lives in jeopardy, she deserves to be punished because she was outraged, violent, verbally abusive, loud, and in a rage. Yes she should be punished because she attacked him and he only defended himself.

the way I look at it they cannot say he used excessive force, since after being hit with that punch she charged him again

I am surprised that she got back up after that punch. I happen to agree with the young man in the YouTube video:

Unbelievable social behavior is common these days, and is exactly why more people elect not to use public transportation. For those who don't have a choice (like my visually impaired daughter), they shouldn't have to be subjected to the likes of Shidea Lane, drunk or not, and others who foist their defiant attitudes, confrontational language and loud mouths on the rest of society. RTA needs to beef their security, and make it known that certain behavior won't be tolerated.

She got what she deserved. The driver should get an award for protecting his passengers.

She should be executed. I would have throat punched her with a butcher knife and threw the carcass to the pigeons. Maybe a public drowning in lake erie
