Rotary Club Supports Bitzer Park Amphitheater & More: Week in Review

Got a sec? That's all it takes to get caught up with the most popular stories from the past week.

1. It's certainly not the end of the road for Amelia Finefrock, 17, of North Canton. She announced on her Facebook page this week that her American Idol stint was up. Feel free to offer up words of encouragement on our latest update. (And don't worry — she's got her chin up and isn't slowing down from here!)

2. Erick Howard was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday for his role in an Aug. 20 home invasion and rape. Howard, 20, of North Canton, told a full courtroom that day that he was sorry for everyone involved in the attack, and there was no one to blame but himself.

3. We announced this week that the Rotary Club of North Canton will use the money from today's Chili Open Golf Classic and Viking Challenge Run to help build an amphitheater at Bitzer Park.

4. We stopped by the Barrel Room Monday night to see lots of vino-inspired artwork and lots of wine lovers at "Wine Not Support the Arts?" The event, hosted by New Work City Foundation, brought about 100 people to the Barrel Room. By the way, if you took any photos that night, go ahead and upload them to our gallery!

5. North Canton Middle School students will do some pretty cool medieval-related learning this year thanks to a grant from ArtsinStark. Check out our update to see what all's in store!

Regarding the proposed amphitheater for Bitzer Park, I would like to ask how many pounds of potatoes can one put in a 10-pound sack. I ask this because Bitzer Park is a very little park. The Veterans War Memorial that was placed in Bitzer is tremendously oversized for the park for starters. The Veterans Memorial is already being used as staging area for every event put on in the city as it is. The Memorial is now consecrated ground and should be respected for what it is. How many more events do we want to cram into little Bitzer Park? Secondly, it has not been widely published, but there have been talk of the YMCA adding a second pool sometime in the future. Any further development in Bitzer Park will close any possiblities of that ever happening or any other expansion that the YMCA might plan on the north side of the YMCA property. Amphitheaters require open space for people to spread out.I do not see Bitzer Park accomodating anything such as an amphitheater. How do ideas like this get started?
