North Canton Patch: A Year in Photos

What makes a good photo? Sometimes it's the story behind the photo. Sometimes it's capturing someone at just the right moment. In this 2011 photo roundup, Patch contributor Rob Netro explains his favorites and tells us what makes a great photo.

Nothing like men in makeup! Mr. Tackett agreed to let me photograph him while getting ready for a North Canton Playhouse show. No flash and a telephoto lens makes for pleasant out-of-focus backgrounds. (Akron resident Justin Tackett is in the role of Hugo Peabody. Shown here applying stage makeup before the show, Tackett has been acting in plays for two years now and appreciates the humor of his character.)

This photo illustrates why it is important to keep high shutter speeds when taking sports pictures. If I had used anything lower than 1/400th of a second Perry's Derek Willems would have been a blurred streak. (Sophomore defensive back Luke Grandjean (10) brings down Panther Derek Willems (33) late in the second half.)
I think this was one of Editor Morgan Day's favorite pictures. You can't beat kids having fun especially when they have blue tongues! (Young kids exercise too! Three-year-old Lucie Bossart and her mother Jennifer, from Canton, play on the swings at Dogwood Park while Lucie's brother practices football across the street.)
This is the kind of shot you can't plan for. I happened to walk behind the end zone to talk to a fellow photographer and luckily had the right lens to be able to get a good perspective, a short telephoto, on my camera. Ideally I could have used a tripod and a smaller aperture to get more of the numbers in focus, but the play would have started by the time I had everything set up. (Hoover players Aaron Viscounte (50) and Ben Thomas (62) huddle with seconds remaining in their contest against the Jackson Polar Bears.)
This was originally my alternate choice among a series of photos I took of young Mr. Archer exiting the ride. I ended up liking the sense of motion, created by using a moderate shutter speed. I also used a very wide angle lens to get right in the ride with him. (Buddy Archer, 7, of Canton, exits the Wacky Shack through the spinning tube. Archer and his family stopped by North Canton's Main Street Festival after attending church.)
This shot caused a little confusion and distress among my Patch editors. Initially they were wondering why the lifeguards allowed so many boys to jump from the dive at once. I explained that it was actually a series of pictures that I had combined into a single frame. This lead to a discussion on the proper term for the photo, eventually dubbed a multi-exposure photo. If I ever try this type of shot again, it would help to use a tripod and fixed manual focus or auto focus tracking, as the camera changed the auto focus point when the subject moved. (In this multi-exposure photo, 9-year-old J.J. Lancia of North Canton works up the nerve to take the plunge. This is the first time he had ever used the 3-meter board, and he said he loves it now. He had previously used the yellow water tubes. He attends Northwood Elementary School.)

I've tried to include pictures from many of the different events that I attended as a contributor to the North Canton Patch throughout the year. Some are technically good; others are just great expressions or smiles. I tried to explain the how and why in each caption along with the origional caption.

Rob, you did a great job selecting these! You're right, though, I think little Lucie Bossart may be my favorite. Oh, and Buddy Archer at the Main Street Festival. And Luke Grandjean snatching the football player in mid-air. *Sigh* They're all good.
