Local Debate Reaction: Dems Say Joe Biden Won; GOP Says Paul Ryan Did

Who won the debate? Democrats say Joe Biden. Republicans say Paul Ryan.

Northeast Ohio Democrats were enthusiastic about Vice President Joe Biden's debate performance on Oct. 11, saying in a Patch survey that Biden advanced the Democratic campaign by besting Paul Ryan.

Local Republicans surveyed said that Ryan, the GOP vice presidential nominee, outperformed Biden but that the national media will declare Biden the winner.

The opinion poll of local partisans was conducted as part of Patch's Red/Blue Northeast Ohio poll series. Patch received survey responses from 16 Democrats and 21 Republicans.

A majority of local Democrats said that Biden defeated Ryan by a "wide margin" and praised the vice president for attacking Ryan on the issues in ways President Barack Obama did not in the debate against Mitt Romney. They believe his performance will help the Democrats get more voters, including coveted swing voters, to the polls to suppor their ticket.

"Vice-President Biden had a very strong, fact-filled performance," wrote one Democratic insider. "Congressman Ryan avoided the issues, instead giving fuzzy 'feel good' stories that mean little."

Meanwhile, Republicans believe Ryan performed well, and will help Republicans win Ohio in November.

The GOP insiders also praised Ryan's "calm, respectful composure" and criticized Biden's "smirking and laughing" during the debate.

"Biden was disrespectful and rude," wrote one GOP insider.

Another Republican said the debate won't really amount to much since it wasn't Obama and Romney squaring off.

Who do you think won? Take our poll and tell us!

"I believe that people are very uninterested in what the VP candidates have to say," a Republican wrote.

Anyone read the heading to this article?
"LOCAL Debate Reaction..."
This is why I feel so strongly about maintaining the integrity of the Patch. Although Patch is all over the country, it has separate editions that are like local papers. I prefer to read my neighbors writings and not someones who only was interested in swaying or influencing our readership, because, IMO, it diminishes what this site was assumed by many to be. IMO, it is becoming a political tool.

Just quickly looked at the Terms of Use, and it does seem that the Patch was meant to be a service for those with a sincere interest in their communities, and not as a platform for "outsiders".
For example,
"after all, these are your neighbors"
"Patch provides a platform for wide-ranging commentary – both positive and negative – by members of local communities"
"offering what we think is a valuable community service: providing a platform for community discussion, debate and expression of opinions on the topics at hand."

FYI - Those 3 quotes I listed came directly from the Patch's Terms of Use.
Not just my problem.

Hey lyn, don't worry, I am not here to with any political agenda. Just stopping by to say hi. I saw the "local" element of this and respectfully stayed out of it, but you looked lonely over here so I just wanted you to know that I was thinking about you. I saw that there were 4 posts and 3 of them were yours and 1 was somebody joking about your post and none of the posts had anything to do with the actual article.

So how is the locals only party going? Have you ever seen that episode of The Office, where Angela has the official Christmas party and Pam & Karen have their own party that everybody goes to:

http://dundermifflinpaper.blogspot.com/2006/12/benihana-christmas.html

This reminds me a lot of that episode.

As I remember that episode ended with Pam and Karen feeling bad for being mean to Angela and reached out to her. So, m.z.1 and Watts are the mean girls we laughed with, but I can't see either of you having the human side they portrayed in the end.

I wasn't sure if m.z.1 was your Dwight or not, possibly keeping you company over here. But either way, you have to admit that the first world problem line was pretty funny.

And you are correct about the actions of of Pam and Karen feeling sorry for Angela, but let's not forget that the show ends (and the series continues) with the character of Angela never reconciling within herself, the unprovoked nastiness that she feels compelled to cast at people.

Do you really want to be the Angela of the Ohio Patch sites? Do you think that this isolationist crusade might be a little much?

And don't forget that apology ;-)

To comment on the original question at hand, Ryan was respectful and thoughtful, Biden came off as arrogant, could not stop interupting and seemed to be on something...

Biden only interrupted because he couldn't get a word in edgewise. And how can you say that "...Ryan was respectful and thoughtful..." when he didn't answer the questions and what he offered instead was a distortion or a bald-faced lie? Take, for example, his newsflash that he now favors exceptions in the case of rape, incest, or the health of a woman to his anti-abortion stance. Before Thursday night he was opposed to any exceptions.

Google Ryan's lies. I'm certain you'll find "About 6,040,000 results" or more, including one item from CBS News that says, "Romney running mate doesn't speak hard truths but tells Republicans stories they like to hear, even if they're not true." In plain English, or Irish, if you will, it's MALARKY.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have some terrific plans for the nation. Help the rich become richer. Make poor and middle class Americans pay more for their healthcare. Force Medicare to become insolvent by 2016, as the CBO reports. Follow a tax plan that does not make mathematical sense as experts say. Lower taxes for millionaires and billionaires. Strip women of the opportunity for legal abortion and full healthcare. Not allow the LGBT community equal rights. Romney and Ryan are determined to take us BACKWARDS to the 1960s! Yippee!

Vote early! Don't let Republicans suppress your right to vote!

Beth, you are right about everything you said, except for the time frame. Depending on the issue, Romney/Ryan's return to the bad old days ranges from as recently as the Dubya years, as in the tax cut issue and deregulation that would be beneficial to corporations but not us, all the way back to the Dark Ages, when people feared science and reason, as so many conservatives appear to do now.

As to the debate, Joe won hands down. I have to ask those who got their panties in a bunch about Joe laughing while Ryan was spinning his web of lies and misstatements...if you were faced by someone spouting whopper after whopper and you knew that you could easily set the record straight, wouldn't you be just pleased as punch that he was playing into your hands? A when did it become presidential or even minimally respectful to the people watching a debate to LIE every time you open your mouth? It's hardly a coincidence that Ryan now wears the appellation "Lyin' Ryan."

At Beth...."Romney and Ryan are determined to take us BACKWARDS to the 1960s! Yippee!"
Your statement makes me laugh. AND Where has Omoron just taken us?...double digit employment, 6 trillion in debt, gas prices at close to $4 dollars....you are like the frat kid in the movie Animal House getting spanked repeatedly, but saying..."thank you sir may I have another"

At Robert...Joe Biden is one heartbeat away from the Presidency. He is Obama's insurance policy.... Like it or not that is not sitting well with many independents and undecided voters. His whiny arrogance, his lack of respect for the office of Vice President by the way he acted, and ignorance of foreign policy and ignorance in general was on full display. He acted like a curmudgeon. VERY distasteful.

And tell me, Joe. Did Lyin' Ryan not leave a bad taste in your mouth? Nobody in either debate was more ignorant on foreign policy than Ryan. All he had to offer were talking points. And didn't anyone ever teach him not to talk when his elders (and betters) were speaking? Joe could hardly get a word in edgewise. And I ask again, how can you think someone is respectful when he's lying to you? What he says depends on the crowd he's talking to...guess he learned that from Mitt...and it changes every day.

And the reason gas prices are up is that the economy is improving...slower than we'd like but still improving. If you could get a look at Mitt's balance statement, you'd see that he's doing just fine, because the stock market is back to its pre-crash levels. It would be even better if your guys hadn't been trying to run the government into the ground the past 4 years, and more than the top 10% would also be doing better. You ought to know that, but you'll never admit it until you take off your ideological blinders.

One final question...do you really want to live in the United States of Exxon, Chase & Haliburton? That's what Rmoney/Ryan will bring.

@ Robert...and your holier than thou Uncle Joe Biden wasn't lying?....about the statement that Iran could not "weaponize" their enriched uranium. Iran has demonstrated missiles capable of ranging to Europe...I guess as the VP he must not be privy to that information?

Oh, here's one....My favorite Biden lie was this whopper:

“they talk about this great recession like it fell out of the sky–like, Oh my goodness, where did it come from? It came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card . . . I WAS THERE, I VOTED AGAINST THEM I SAID NO, WE CAN'T AFFORD THAT.”
When, in fact, Biden voted for both wars. I repeat....Biden voted for both wars.
Ummmmm....That's a pretty big lie.

And yes, if Exxon and Chase and Haliburton were putting those 46 million that Obama put on food stamps back to work, heck yes I'd be thrilled. You liberals want to demonize everyone having money and the huge nasty corporations but where would everyone work if not for them?....The Government?

Corporations provide many people jobs, but that's not what they exist for. A corporation exists in order to protect the assets of the owners and officers. When it all comes apart is when some idiot tries to proclaim that they're PEOPLE and tries to give them the same but unequal rights that REAL people have. They end up being able to unduly influence our economy and our government, which is exactly what they're doing now, thanks to the idiotic Citizens United Supreme Court decision.

Obama didn't put those people on food assistance. But those people needed something after the banks screwed up the economy. The Great Recession wasn't Obama's handiwork. It was the work of Bush, deregulation, and crooked dealing by big financial organizations. We'd be in a 2nd Great Depression now had Obama not pushed through some unpopular measures to stimulate the economy, such as rescuing those same banks and the auto industry. You can say they should have failed...I suspect you will, but what would be the sense of letting that happen? An ideological response like that would have GUARANTEED a depression. Choosing that result over a bailout is the financial and social equivalent to smacking yourself in the forehead with a 2X4. Maybe you've tried it?

To finish my thoughts, because this absurd format cut me short:

Did Biden make an erroneous claim about his votes on the wars? I accept you may be right there, but that would have put him in the company of most of the Senate after the Bush administration hyped up the argument for Iraq and took his eye off the ball in Afghanistan. The former never should have happened, and the latter should have been over years ago, but for Bush's fixation on Iraq. The IAEC says Iran does not have the highly enriched uranium required to make a bomb. What...are you itching for another war? If so, and you get your way, I hope you're prepared to go.

It's all Bush's fault. Male pattern baldness, Bush's fault. Restless leg syndrome, Bush's fault. Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Bush's fault. Biden laughing and smirking throughout his debate, Bush's fault. Libya attacks, Bush's fault. Irritable bowl syndrome, Bush's fault. He is the most advanced super villain the world has ever seen!

Robert stop pimping the media talking points and read this article below to expand your knowledge base beyond those talking heads on the boob tube. This article is from World Economists. I suppose your going to tell me in the next e-mail they aren't as smart as your messiah and our AA credit rating we were down graded to under his leadership was Bush's fault.  http://www.forbes.com/sites/paulroderickgregory/2012/09/04/world-economists-confirm-americas-decline-under-obama/
