Hoover High Varsity Baseball, Football Fields Named After Greats

North Canton City Schools Board of Education met Wednesday night and approved the naming of the varsity football and baseball fields after two men — Don Hertler Sr. and Dick Miller

North Canton resident Randy Santangelo considers former football coach Don Hertler Sr. and longtime groundskeeper Dick Miller “icons” of the city.

Many others must feel strongly about them, too, because the North Canton City Schools Board of Education agreed to name the varsity football field Don Hertler Sr. Field and the varsity baseball field Dick Miller Field at Wednesday night’s meeting.

“These guys, they just richly deserve it,” said Santangelo, a 1970 Hoover High graduate. “They’re just icons.”

Santangelo addressed the board, saying Miller, who died in 2006, had tended to the stadium for 42 years.

“I just wish Dick was still around,” he said. “He would go nuts over this.”

North Canton Memorial Stadium will retain its name.

The board also accepted the resignation for the retirement of Clearmount Elementary Principal Barbara Jones. Jones’ retirement is effective July 1.

The next meeting of the North Canton City Schools Board of Education will be at 6 p.m. April 27.
