Friday Fact: What's That Little Brick Booth at Main and Maple Streets?
The little brick booth at Main and Maple streets, right in front of the old Hoover building, dates back to the 1940s or earlier. But what is it?
The crossing guard building on Main and Maple streets has been seen in photos dating back to the 1940s, according to the North Canton Heritage Society.

That little building that sits at the corner of Main and Maple streets? Sure, it’s cute. But what is it?
Many of the historians in North Canton might already know this one.
“It was a place for the crossing guard (and) for the kids to stay warm,” said Kathy Fernandez, executive director of the North Canton Heritage Society. “It’s in pictures from the 1940s and earlier.”
She guesses the building stopped being used in the 1960s.

This seems like a disappointing explanation. Couldn't it have been a Police Outpost or for a Traffic Director during rush hours when Hoover shifts changed?

Next time I'm in the Historical Society I'll ask around. There likely could be more history in it than this, right? Anyone else out there know something about it?

That little brick building brings back memories for me. I used to walk to Portage School in 1957...(Kindergarten) The crossing guard at the time was a police officer Red William
I went to Portage till about the 2nd grade about the time they built Clearmount School where I went. And then on to North Canton Jr. High..The good ole days. One thing I can say I never went in the building to get warm LOL

It was used for a crossing guard years ago. They stopped using it maybe 20-25 years ago.

I always thought it was manned by Hoover security back in the sixties. He controlled the light during and for Hoover peak traffic times.
