Coroner: Canton Woman Died from Injuries Suffered in Train Crash
Preliminary autopsy results show Wiladine VanWert, 85, whose car collided with a moving train in Jackson Township Friday, died of injuries suffered in the crash
Preliminary autopsy results show that the Canton woman whose car collided with a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train Friday morning died from injuries related to the crash.
The crash took place at Portage Street NW just west of Whipple Avenue NW, near Mohler Lumber, about 11:45 a.m. that morning. Wiladine VanWert, 85, of Canton, drove her 2005 Honda Accord through an active railroad crossing warning gate and collided with a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train.
VanWert was pronounced dead at the scene by Chief Investigator Harry Campbell of the Stark County Coroner’s office.
Stark County Coroner P.S. Murthy conducted VanWert's autopsy Sunday.
"I found no anatomical abnormality or acute conditions that would suggest that Mrs. Van Wert was unresponsive at the time of a crash," Murthy said today in a news release.
He said VanWert suffered massive injuries to her head, cervical spine and torso.
The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
