A Chorus for a Cause Finds Inspiration in Poet for Jan. 28 Concert
The Children's and Youth Choirs of A Chorus for a Cause will present "Heartsongs," a song cycle inspired by the life and words of the amazing young poet, Mattie J.T. Stepanek, January 28, 2012 at 6:00 pm at Zion United Church of Christ in North Canton. Through Mattie's poetry and personal appearances on shows like Oprah, Good Morning America, Larry King Live and others, he impacted the world with an authenticity of spirit rarely seen.
There are eight choral songs in the cycle that represent some of the important elements of Mattie's writing. Six of the movements are based on actual poems written by Mattie. In Matie's first book, he left pages for people to write their own "Heartsongs." The children and youth of the choirs have been encouraged to do just that. Working on this music has been a lesson in life as well as music.
In between the songs you will hear some narration...simple, yet profound in their insights, these words are treasured testimonies of the human spirit, and gentle admonitions for all of us to listen and learn. The message of this music is essential for young voices to sing. It is their "Heartsongs" that can truly change the world and bring Mattie's dreams for a better world to a wonderful reality.
The Children's Choir is for singers grades 3 and 4 and the Youth Choir is for grades 5 through 12. Members of these two choirs are auditioned. Group auditions for new members will be held after the "Heartsongs" concert and others can be scheduled by calling the director, Christine Allison, at 330-456-3186.
The choirs are accompanied by the outstanding pianist/musician, Sandy Simpson.
The January 28th concert will be a free will donation, PLUS the children and youth are collecting children’s toys to be given to Jayani’s Treasure Chest at Aultman Hospital. Help them make a difference and to bring about Mattie Stepanek's philosophy of life: "remember to play after every storm!" "Make a choice to celebrate life to its fullest" and be an example of doing good every day.
